Ruto has been chairing meetings both in the country and outside to seek an end of the war in Eastern DRC. On Wednesday, Ruto met leaders allied to DRC President Felix Tshisekedi at State House, Nairobi.
According to Daily Monitor, among Rwanda's officials sanctioned are Rwanda's State Minister for Regional Integration, General James Kabarebe, and Lawrence Kanyuka, a spokesperson for the M23 rebel group.
The US has linked them to the involvement in violence and human rights abuses in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The sanctions also target two companies associated with Kanyuka. The M23 rebels, allegedly supported by Rwandan forces, have caused significant casualties and displacement in the region.
The US also called for Rwanda to withdraw its troops from the DRC, emphasizing that the conflict threatens the DRC's territorial integrity and has resulted in numerous civilian casualties, including the deaths of three UN peacekeepers.
The M23 group, one of many militias in the country, has taken control of vast parts of mineral-rich eastern DRC since its resurgence in 2021.
