The Ministry of Education has announced plans to build 1,600 laboratories in support of increased infrastructure needs of junior secondary schools. This comes amidst the wider government effort to enhance the competency-based curriculum.
According to the Education Cabinet Secretary, Julius Ogamba, over 14,000 classrooms have so far been constructed in the last three months across the country to pave the way for learners leaving primary schools joining JSS. The construction of the laboratories will provide the learners with a conducive environment, especially in the learning of STEM subjects.
The government, he said, is working to ensure the JSS learners are adequately equipped for the STEM pathways. "We are ensuring every learner gets adequate facilities to enhance quality education," said CS Ogamba while on a visit to Uthiru Primary School in Nairobi.
In addition, the Ministry has been able to partly solve the textbook shortage by printing 9.9 million books for JSS learners. The government assured parents that each learner would have their own textbooks for every subject, for which no parent would need to buy privately.
To further entrench student welfare, the Ministry has urged parents to ensure their children are registered with the Social Health Authority (SHA). It added that in the long run, the learners will equally realise enormous health gains from the arrangement.
